TMJ Symptoms, Jaw Pain, Headaches & Ear Pain Explained

TMJ Disorder, also called temporomandibular disorder or TMD, can affect more than the jaw joint. Symptoms may appear as jaw pain, headaches, ear pressure, facial pain, neck discomfort, clicking, popping, locking, or pain while chewing. This learning center helps patients understand common TMJ-related symptoms, when symptoms may point to another condition, and when professional evaluation may be appropriate.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Most jaw pain is not an emergency. However, seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Sudden, severe jaw pain with no clear cause
  • Jaw pain accompanied by chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Facial swelling, especially with fever
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Jaw pain after significant trauma or injury
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the face
  • Inability to open or close the mouth (locked jaw)
